Headset tools

Postby Gaz on Tue Mar 02, 2010 2:44 pm

Just to get an idea who has headset tools that they'd be willing to let me use?

When I got a replacement frame under warranty from Giant first thing I did was smash a headset in with a block of wood and a hammer. Its not hard to do right and unless youre a moron its quite hard to do it wrong. However a headset press is soooooooooooooo much better.

Proper headset press is alot easier to use than that style of one (those are handy if you've not got a real one about though) Ive used a quick release to install a headset too, that took aaaaaaaaages.

Haven't actually got one yet as I thought if I bought it from CRC and then asked Summit to fit it, it would be a bit cheeky. Will probably get a Hope, Chris King is way too expensive especially when I'm looking at possibly getting wider handlebars and that damn computer component I've been meaning to buy for ages.

If no one has the tools then I'll go to Summit, says on their site that it's £15-£2 though I'm guessing that's a typo. Halfords charges you £8 for inner tube replacements so that can't be right.

yeah i'd expect 15-20 to be about right- i'm not sure summit would be that pissed off if you ask them to do it even if you have bought it elsewhere- your putting business their way and if they dont have to face the headset cups, it wont actually take them that long.

tbh changing innertubes on a bike is probly more faff!

Sorted. Bike is in Summit now and will hopefully have a new Hope headset fitted today. Summit sell the headset at RRP but with 10% off it makes only a bit more expensive than CRC, worth paying the bit extra in my opinion if it's supporting a local business :) .

They will face your headtube as well as warranty on the headset is void if its not done.

The same guy that made those homemade tools budget put up also says this a bit further down...

Long story short, I have to face the head tube now, because I dinged it up with the shop hammer. And depending on how bad it is, I might have to shave a little off the steerer too.

What a dick.
