Pardon the STW'ness here, but...

Postby Jimbo on Fri Aug 28, 2009 4:45 pm

...what tyres for one's road bike? The CAAD currently wears some basic Vitorria things that costs about £5 new. They're black, round, rubbery, but feel like they're made from wood. And weigh the same as if they were.

Any pointers? Seems to be a tie between the Conti GP4000S, Vitorria Open Corsa Evo CXII ('kin long name...) or Open Pave Evo CGs, or Michelin Race 3s.

I don't claim to know anything about road tyres, but I got some conti ultragator 26" jobbies a while back and they seem to do the job nicely. Continental do loads of road tyres - thats where i'd look first.

My Kona came with Maxxis Detonators, they're dual compound with a soft compound on the shoulder for cornering, they've been really good so far but that doesnt count for much because i havent used any others, not sure what they're like price wise either.

Apparently the maxxis road tyres are pretty damn good.
Change down, man. Find your neutral space. You gotta rush. It'll pass. Be seated.

I know i'm on the payroll but I can't rate the conti Grand Prix fold in 24mm guise enough. They are considerably cheaper than the gp4000s', which are probably the best tyre out there, but still have black chili compound which has saved my ass a few times whilst making the bike feel noticeably faster.

So to summarise. That's what you want!

I would avoid dual compound tyres from my experience.

I have known people rave about the Pro's and Pro 2's but my brother didnt rate the Pro 3's he had.

Haven't ridden Maxxis.

Most Vittoria's belong in a bin im afraid Jimbo. Sorry. I'm guessing yours are Rubinhos?

I would go for the conti grand prix 24mm or the GP Triathlons (provided you get the black chilli ones, which, are black). Or an attack force set.

Other options are Veloflex Pave (not vittoria open pave) which are hand made like a high quality tub, but not cheap.

Gatorskins are good in the wonter but don't stick as well as other conti tyres due to the harder compound.

Cheers for the pointers guys. Went for the GP4000s' in the end, and rather splendid they are too. Night-and-day difference when compared to the OE Vittorias!
